What is it?
The SLTOP is designed to bridge the gap between school and the world of work for recent school leavers. It gives these young persons the experience necessary to develop a greater understanding of the complexities of the working environment and provides some tools required to become competitive members of the labour force. Trainees will work with a firm for up to one year where they are encouraged to fully immerse themselves into the daily operations of that environment.
How does training work?
A Placement and Monitoring Officer will provide orientation material to help you to adjust to the world of work. You will then be referred for interviews to firms with an interest in your selected skill area. While training your Placement and Monitoring Officer will make contact with the firm every 6 to 8 weeks to evaluate your experience. If you have any problems, this is the person whom you must consult.
You will also be assigned to a Supervisor at your place of work. He/she will act as your trainer and will be key to evaluating your performance on the job as well as a portfolio you must complete. This portfolio will detail the skill areas you develop on the job. You are required to complete these evaluations and portfolio as part of the programme.
Who is eligible
Recent school leavers (ages 17-23) with two or more passes from the following examination boards or their equivalent.
A combination of subjects from the above-named examinations. Any other qualification acceptable to the HEART Trust/ NTA.
