Community Based Training (C.B.T.) was introduced into the HEART Trust from as early as 1983 just after the birth of the HEART Trust. However the involvement in Community Based Training was marginal, and was sponsored by the Dutch Government, which funded training in a few select communities.
Community Based Training really took on greater significance when approaches were made by various communities for assistance in skills training in the early nineteen nineties. This period was characterized by high unemployment among the labour force; especially women. HEART Trust/NTA responded to this situation by partnering with communities to offer training to the unskilled and the unemployed. Partnership is one of HEART Trust’s core values and therefore it was not difficult to collaborate in order to achieve some significant gains. In 1995 we partnered with ten (10) communities and implemented skills training in eight (8) skill areas. To date we have partnered with over one hundred (100) communities, and are training in some thirty (30) skill areas. We have trained approximately 20,000 persons in Community Based projects over the past nine (9) years.
